What is TemporaryInbox.com?

Temporaryinbox.com is a free disposable email address service.

What do you mean by "disposable email address?"

Those email addresses are short-time-use-email-addresses, which can be used once or twice; then you don't have to care about them anymore. Your temporary address is deleted after six hours.

Why would I ever want disposable email?

You want to participate in a lottery, or register in a forum or a news site that requires you to give an email address. These services provide something that you want, but you may not trust their privacy policies; and you're sick of going through the process of creating a new email address at your preferred free provider, getting invites, and all that. Perhaps you want to sign up for a one-shot account on a board so you can post a potentially inflammatory, unpopular, or whistle-blower message without being linked to your "real" identity. It's time for a temporary and disposable email address!

Can you walk me through how to use it the service?

Sure. Let's do a step by step walkthrough to show you exactly how easy it is.

The situation: You want to signup at a website/forum/blog/etc. You are at the registration form, and an email address is required. You're not too keen on the idea. So, you choose to use temporaryinbox.com, and you've already installed the Firefox extension. An IE extension is also available.

( You don't even have to download anything, by the way. Full functionality is available on the site at www.temporaryinbox.com - the toolbar sure does make things easier for regular users, though. )

1. Click the "random email" button on the temporaryinbox firefox extension toolbar. This generates your random, temporary email address.
2. Copy it from the toolbar to the email address field in the registration form you're filling out; then finish and submit.
3. Now click the "check" button on the toolbar, and you'll be taken directly to your temporary inbox. Open the email and click the activation link or copy the password... or whatever.
4. That's it! You've just successfully taken a step towards stopping spam in your inbox and protecting your right to privacy and anonymity!

Once you're done you can delete the mail, or let it be. Remember, that the inbox will be deleted after six hours, regardless.

PLEASE BEAR IN MIND that your temporary inbox is NOT PASSWORD PROTECTED! Anybody who knows the account name can check for messages.

Because I hate spam! But first I saw some other sites, which offered this service. I loved them immediately and wanted to create my own.

NO. There is no security.

The accounts are NOT password protected. So ANYBODY who knows your account name can read or delete the messages, until the account expires.

Software

http://www.temporaryinbox.com runs on LAMP: Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP.

It uses Postfix for a mail server, and DBMail for the email-database conversions.

Configuration Description

Messages sent anywhere @ temporaryinbox.com are caught by a catch-all user. All messages for this user are then stored in a database, through dbmail. The web application simply searchs for email in the database and displays them accordingly.
